Success Program – Supporting Students to Succeed

The Hedland Senior High School Success Program helps students build career skills through hands-on learning and local work placements. With improved attendance and a work placement at IBN Group, student Melinda McKenzie is gaining valuable experience and making meaningful contributions to her community.

The Hedland Senior High School Success Program is designed to increase student engagement and attendance while providing real-life learning opportunities through career skill development and workplace learning. In the Working for Success class, students in Years 10 to 12 develop individual career profiles to guide their learning, helping them focus on gaining the skills and credentials needed for their future pathways.

After more than a year in the program, Melinda McKenzie has demonstrated remarkable progress. She has improved her attendance by 30% and this year successfully undertook a work placement with local organisation IBN Group.

Through this opportunity, Melinda supported the delivery of services to the Yinhawangka, Banyjima and Nyiyaparli people, assisting teams in education, health, and community programs. She gained valuable experience in administrative duties such as data entry, filing, and client service in a culturally respectful environment, while also contributing to community engagement efforts.

The support of the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership has been instrumental in creating opportunities like these, allowing students like Melinda to take confident strides toward their future goals.
