Through the Rise Up program, students at Hedland Senior High School are taking the lead in shaping their learning journeys, and their voices are being heard.

The school now has a Debate Club, initiated by a passionate group of Year 9 students. Through collaboration across English, Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Rise Up program, students developed and presented a compelling case to school leadership, advocating for a club focused on building communication and reasoning skills in a supportive, engaging environment.
Their initiative paid off. The Debate Club now meets fortnightly, giving students the chance to explore topics of significance, sharpen their public speaking skills, and become future opinion leaders. Students not only take pride in their debating skills but also in the creation of the club itself. This achievement has fostered a stronger sense of identity and community.
Here’s what some of the Debate Club members had to say:
“You are not alone; you are a part of a team.”
“I am looking at a greater aspect of myself providing me with opportunities to achieve through thought-provoking communication.”
“I can improve the school and my own life by giving back”.
“My voice matters, your voice matters, together we bring about change and transformation”.
“My confidence to present and speak in front of my peers has grown considerably”.
