Newman Senior High School is committed to offering students diverse pathways to success, particularly in a remote setting where the traditional ATAR route to university may pose unique challenges. Many students enter Year 11 and 12 uncertain about their future, and conventional university-bound courses may not always suit their circumstances. Through the support of the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership, Newman Senior High School provides alternative university pathways, leveraging School-Based Traineeships and higher-level vocational certificates to prepare students for success.

Innovative Pathways for Year 12 Students
School-Based Traineeship pathways are a popular choice at Newman Senior High School, with many students completing a Certificate II qualification in Year 11. However, this often leaves students with fewer structured opportunities in Year 12. To address this, partnership funding has enabled the development of advanced programs offering eligible students the chance to pursue Certificate IV qualifications in their final year. These higher-level certifications not only enhance employability but also provide a gateway to university through alternative entry pathways.
Success Stories in 2024
In 2024, two School-Based Traineeships students gained hands-on experience working in education at the local primary school, inspiring them to consider careers in teaching. With support from an external provider, these students enrolled in a Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support. By the time they graduated Year 12, they were well on their way to completing the qualification. Their outstanding commitment and effort led to both students being offered roles as Education Assistants at the primary school, allowing them to gain further experience while continuing their studies. Equipped with practical experience and a recognised qualification, these students are now on a clear path to university and teaching careers.
Another student, after completing a Certificate II in Workplace Skills through a BHP School-Based Traineeship, advanced to a Certificate IV in Business in Year 12. Upon graduation, she had completed her qualification, secured university admission through alternative entry, and received a job offer from BHP—giving her an impressive head start in her career.
Additionally, one student pursued a Certificate IV in Community Services, a pathway that keeps his university options open, while another general studies student with strong academic potential enrolled in the Certificate IV in School-Based Education. With school support, she secured a work placement at the primary school, further broadening her career prospects.
Empowering Students to Achieve Bright Futures
At Newman Senior High School, offering alternative university pathways is a cornerstone of career planning. These programs are invaluable for students who may find ATAR courses challenging or discover a passion for further education later in their journey. With targeted support and funding, Newman Senior High School is breaking down barriers to higher education, ensuring all students—regardless of their starting point—have the opportunity to pursue their ambitions and build a bright future.
