Ready for University with ATAR Program Support

The Pathways strategy aims to add value to school core business by strengthening the preparation of young people for life beyond school. Four senior students at Hedland Senior High School say they feel more confident about starting university thanks to the school’s ATAR Program, supported by through the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership. The program provides a range of opportunities to help regional students compete with their metropolitan peers, including ATAR revision camps, access to online learning platforms, and financial support for textbooks, laptops, and study equipment.

Year 12 student Elizabeth said attending four ATAR revision camps since Year 11 had been particularly valuable. “The small ATAR classes also mean more one-on-one time with teachers, which helps me improve my results,” she said. Elizabeth hopes to study Architecture or Interior Architecture at Curtin University or the University of Western Australia.

Lenci highlighted the benefit of financial support, which eased the cost of purchasing essential resources such as textbooks. “The ATAR Program has supported me in developing independent study habits, which will prepare me for university,” Lenci plans to study Biomedical Science at UWA as a pathway to a career in medicine.

For Gianelle, access to online platforms such as Atomi and Revise Online has been a highlight. “These tools let me catch up on lessons and strengthen my understanding of topics at my own pace.” Gianelle hopes to study Biomedical Science at Curtin University and later specialise in neurology or cardiology.

Reighn said revision camps gave her the chance to learn alongside like-minded peers. “It’s helped me to build strong networks, discipline, good study habits and to stay motivated.” Reighn has applied to the University of Queensland to study Health Science or Pharmacy, with the goal of moving into medicine. All four students agree that the combination of small class sizes, revision camps, financial support and online study tools has made a significant difference to their confidence and preparation for final exams. Looking ahead to the end of Year 12, they are most excited about the independence of university life, meeting new people, and pursuing their chosen career pathways.
