Tasting Career Opportunities

The Pathways program at Newman Senior High School provides students with hands-on experiences to explore future careers. At a recent Careers Camp in Karratha, 37 Year 9 students engaged directly with industries like mining, construction, health, and beauty - building confidence and expanding their career horizons.

The Pathways program at Newman Senior High School equips students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to make informed career choices. By offering real-world learning experiences, it aims to boost student engagement and open doors to future opportunities.

In May, 37 enthusiastic Year 9 students attended a Careers Camp in Karratha, where they explored various industries such as health, mining, construction, instrumentation, beauty, and high-risk work environments through hands-on activities and direct industry engagement.

For Rubi-Rose Reece, a quiet and thoughtful Aboriginal student who has resided in Newman for 8 years, the camp was a turning point. Although Ruby had attended a primary school camp before, this was her first high school trip. She enjoyed connecting with new peers and exploring career options, especially electrical work, beauty, and instrumentation. The hands-on experiences helped her imagine working in those fields.

The camp also boosted Ruby’s confidence and sparked a genuine interest in careers she hadn’t considered. “I would give electrical career a go,” she said. Her advice to others: “Be yourself and have fun. Engage in a lot of the career activities.”

Rubi-Rose’s experience highlights how the Pathways program can inspire students to explore new futures with confidence.
