Partnerships Improve Access to Early Hearing Support

Strong local partnerships are helping Port Hedland families access free hearing assessments and ear health support, increasing early identification and better outcomes for young children across the community.

The BHP Pilbara Education Partnership is based on collaboration. Through cooperation between Hearing Australia, Early Learning Programs, JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub, Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation, Child Australia, Multicultural Health Connect, and the Child and Parent Centre at the YMCA, children and families across Port Hedland were recently provided with free, accessible hearing assessments and ear health support.

Over one week, 42 children, including infants as young as 10 weeks old, received hearing assessments in familiar, child-friendly settings. The week included a Flourishing Families Ear Health Day which extended access to families across the wider community and reduced barriers such as wait times for specialist services.

The success of the initiative highlights the value of strong partnerships in supporting early identification, intervention, and referral pathways for children who may have hearing concerns. This collaborative approach demonstrates how partnership-based service delivery can improve access to developmental services, strengthen connections between families and support providers, and contribute to better outcomes for young children across the Pilbara.
