Building Pathways in Rail at Newman Senior High School

Newman Senior High School students are building practical industry skills through the Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure, gaining hands-on experience and preparing for future training and employment pathways.

At Newman Senior High School, the Pathways Program, supported by the BHP Pilbara Education Partnership, is helping to build a strong career development culture and expand post-school opportunities for students.

A key milestone has been the introduction of the Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure, delivered by Iron Training through the school’s Trade Training Centre. Recently, Year 11 students marked a significant achievement when they completed their first rail-cutting project, an important practical component of the qualification.

Student Jose has enjoyed the opportunity to develop specialised knowledge and skills in the rail industry.

‘I like being able to learn about one area of the business and focus on building a large amount of knowledge in rail. I also get to develop and improve specific rail skills. A highlight for me so far has been building trust with my team on site and getting to use all of the rail equipment’.

For Kayden, the hands-on nature of the training has been a standout feature.

‘It’s great because there is a lot of practical, hands-on work in rail. I really enjoy learning through Iron Training, and a highlight for me so far has been using the rail saw to cut rail. A highlight on site has been building trust with my team, which has allowed me to take on more hands-on jobs’.

These opportunities showcase the impact of strong partnerships between schools and industry. By connecting students with real-world learning experiences aligned to their interests, the program is strengthening career readiness and equipping young people with the confidence, skills and networks needed to successfully transition into future education, training and employment pathways.
