The Newman Senior High School Pathways strategy aims to create inclusive opportunities for Year 12 students, fostering engagement and helping them establish networks to thoroughly prepare students for their post-school options. The partnership recently supported Aboriginal student, Liam Limbie to participate in ‘A Day in the Life of a Soldier, a unique work experience opportunity for 18 students across WA, providing insight into the wide range of Army trades and associated career options. This event was held at Irwin Barracks in Perth.
Throughout the day, Liam engaged in various activities. Personal training sessions demonstrated the significance of physical fitness in military life, while simulated weapon training and mine sweeping detection exercises offered hands-on experiences in critical military skills. Liam also had the chance to witness firsthand the array of Army transport vehicles, culminating in a ride in a Bushmaster, a formidable truck designed for travelling through rough terrain.
A highlight of the day for Liam was the session focusing on the different entry pathways into the Army. As the only Aboriginal participant, Liam had the opportunity to engage in valuable one-on-one discussions with an officer regarding the support available through the Indigenous pathway. This session not only provided him with insights into specific support structures but also emphasized the Army’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
“It was an eye-opening experience and I’m grateful for the chance to learn more about the pathways available to me. It has strengthened my desire to be a part of the Infantry division in the army”.
